University of NSW academics rubbed shoulders with IoT experts at the Innovation Central Sydney (ICS) information session held on 27 April 2017 and hosted by UNSW Entrepreneur in Residence Danielle Neale.
ICS opened its doors in May 2016 in at the Australian Technology Park in inner-Sydney suburb Redfern, a prototyping and demonstration facility for all things related to the Internet of Things (IoT). A partnership between NSW Farmers, NSW Department of Primary Industries, Data61, CISCO and the University of NSW, it is driving the adoption of new IoT solutions in agriculture, energy, water and beyond.
The aim of this exciting incubator program is to bring together businesses, startups, industry, research and government bodies to prototype, test and fast-track the commercialisation of the most promising products and services in the IoT space.
Following the success of the Redfern venture, UNSW decided to establish a second innovation hub in its School of Computer Science and Engineering. The new hub will leverage the university’s world-class researchers and facilities to prototype cutting-edge IoT technologies for agriculture, transport, water, energy and smart cities.
The recent Information Session at UNSW was attended by several esteemed Professors from across the nine schools of the university’s Faculty of Engineering and from other faculties within UNSW, including Built Environment, Business and the Michael Crouch Innovation Centre (MCIC).
Speakers at the event included UNSW’s Dean of Engineering Mark Hoffman; Associate Dean for Industry and Innovation Ian Gibson; and Rhod Brown, Centre Lead, Innovation Central Sydney.
In the near future, ICS will launch an online platform via which the broader community will be able to submit innovative ideas and ‘grand challenges’ to the Innovation Hub.
